<image:caption>Columbus Junction was founded in the late 19th century by primarily European migrants. Today, unlike many neighboring towns that are dying, Columbus Junction is booming, thanks to a growing migrant and refugee population from Latin America and Burma. This project includes audio interviews and photographs connecting today’s migrants to those who founded the town in the late 19th century. Shipley’s photographs are made in dialog with the town’s photographic archive. The archival photographs span from the town’s founding in 1870 to the early 20th century, and feature a community of recent arrivals. These photographs are seen alongside audio interviews of current residents, which focus on the immigrant experience—whether it happened 100 years ago or last year. The stories collected underline a desire for a better life somewhere safe and economically secure. However, we noted that many interviewees felt their experiences to be unique to their race, nationality, and era of migration. These photos and audio interviews offer the chance to consider the similar narratives in different migrant experiences. Using the original photography archives of the town as inspiration for the new portraits, the migrants of today become part of a visual lineage connected to the past, encouraging the residents of the town and people everywhere to recognize the universality of migration in the evolution American places.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Devil's Promenade</image:title>
<image:caption>A Collaborative project by Lara Shipley and Antone Dolezal The Ozark backwoods are a place you feel. The dark nooks to hide, made in encroaching woods and the banks of rivers, the smell of wet life and decay, a steady insect hum, all create a backdrop for a people with a particular fascination for the mysteries of darkness and light. Here some of the oldest stories of humanity are told—wanderers’ lost souls and paths taken towards good or evil—but with a local twist in the tale of a strange orb of light. Folkloric stories can provide insight into very real issues in a community. This region is marked by isolated poverty, wariness of outsiders, and a struggle between heaven and hell that factors into everyday conversation. Spook Light is known as a floating orb found on a wooded road in a region where the Devil is said to reside. In lieu of a scientific explanation the appearance of the Spook Light has come to represent for the community a desire for redemption and the fear of slipping into darkness. It is the sublime experience whose defiance of explanation provides a reprieve from ordinary life while the stories told to explain its origin are firmly rooted in the foundation of human existence. Devil’s Promenade is a project about our home region that blends folklore and local history with present day photographs of Ozark people, the land, and interpretive images based on the living mythology of the Light. These photographs are combined with oral accounts, short fiction, and found photographs from the region’s past in the three-part book series Spook Light Chronicles. Our aim is not to provide documentation or an explanation of the phenomenon, but to suggest a narrative that, in the spirit of the light, is part fixed in this unique region and part afloat in a mysterious, otherworldly realm. <image:caption>These pictures are made in Northern Minnesota, using a mix of traditional and motion sensor cameras processed using printmaking techniques and photography. The wolves here are the only ones in the lower 48 to never be completely eradicated, only because of the extreme remoteness of the region. In the 1600s it was estimated that 2 to 3 wolves lived in every 10 square miles of land in the continental U.S., including Detroit, where I live. The Europeans who encountered these wolves had largely never seen one before but met them with the fear and hatred inherited from their folklore. Beliefs haven’t changed, though our landscapes have. Now I must drive over 30 minutes to find a forest big enough to escape the sounds of traffic. The woods I find now feel empty, domesticated. Wolves can thrive anywhere where they are tolerated by people. That so few of those places remain, and that laws towards them range from full protection to state hunting bounties, says much to an American confusion and distaste towards wildness. Our lives are too short to see the world we make. Every generation of people is born into a new reality and deprived of a felt knowledge of what has been lost. This extinction of experience guarantees there will never be a reality we aren’t able accept. It takes active imagination to create a different reality than the one we inherited. This is a real, present landscape. But for most of us, it’s as if it never existed.</image:caption>
